The clown at a birthday party, the Broadway show, a stadium rock concert, or even your friends fighting over the last potato chip—all of these are forms of entertainment. From the Old French entretenement, meaning “to hold together or support,” entertainment grew to include any amusement or distraction. The overlapping nature of familiar themes, images, and structures across different media has helped to sustain this growth.
