Entertaiment is the act of entertaining. It can be in the form of theatre, movies, music, art or even a joke. Entertaiment hits on the points that our brains were evolved to react deeply to, ie social backstabbing, murders etc. Entertainment stimulates the brain to realease seratonin and dopamine which gives us a good feeling.
Entertainment is a word that has been derived from the Latin intertenere, meaning to hold inside something. It then morphed into the French entretenir. It also shares its root with the Latin tenere, which is a part of the Indo-European root *ten- “to stretch.” This suffix has become a common one for nouns formed from verb stems in English (amazement, betterment, merriment, adornment, etc.).
