Something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement: Solving the daily crossword puzzle is entertainment for many. The term may refer to any agreeable or diverting occupation for the mind, such as reading or playing games; or to a performance: The ball was an elaborate entertainment. The word comes from the Latin inter tenere, a play on words whose Indo-European root is ten, or “stretch.” (Try saying tenere backwards.)
